Inbar Shapira // Future in Process

 

A series of postcards named "En L'an 2000" (in the year 2000) were published in France in the year of 1900, mostly illustrated by the artist Jean-Marc Cote. The postcards depict how people imagined the world to be at the beginning of the 20th century. The retro-futuristic series shows figures flying on planes and in imaginary vehicles, but on the other hand they were dressed as in the late 19th century fashion. These postcards reflect optimism about technological achievements of the period.

 

Throughout history, various people have imagined the future at different points in time, which intrigued me about the postcard's series. Whenever I think about the future, my main image is the wonders of technology that are slowly replacing human actions.

This is how I discovered Hiroto Ikeuchi, a contemporary Japanese artist who disassembles and reassembles various of technological devices into accessories, exploring the relationship between humans and technology.

 

In my project I examine the gap between imagination and reality, past and future. Using fashion elements from 19th century such as man's suits, stripes and plaids, I designed a women's ready-to-wear collection. I created original prints and used wool, leather, silk, cotton, denim and knitwear knitted from wool and lurex threads.
