Yuval Lasri // BODY AS MEDIUM

My graduation collection deals with the representation of the female form. My objective was to celebrate the humanity, vulnerability, and relatability of real women who reject being bound by popular culture’s representation of them. 

In my collection I was inspired by performance art, using the artist’ body as a medium and grotesquely inflicting harm is an essential part of the performance. I focused on the radical works of Marina Abramović, Sigalit Landau, Yoko Ono and Orlan.

My personal connection to the subject matter stems from a deep feeling of identification and empathy, my personal dialogue with my body and my role as a woman in shattering the representation of the female form as non-human.

The collection I worked with a flesh tone color palette and the natural colors of the materials I incorporated. Materials like felt, leather and metal that have the ability to follow the body and hold the memory of its shape as second skin. By sculpting on the models’ bodies, I wanted to create tension once between the viewer, encountering the familiar female form in a most vulnerable way and again in showing a garments’ ability to create duality of fragility and confidence.
