Lior Weinberg // Paradox of Fashion

Dress codes and uniforms have existed since the dawn of history and accompany us to this day. Uniforms represent order and social hierarchy and are designed to blend and emphasize its wearers. Even in the absence of a certain dress code, humans continue to belong to groups that differ in visual appearance and produce social uniforms and status symbols. The fashion system creates a paradox, as the philosopher Georg Simmel argued that fashion derives from a basic tension specific to the social condition of the human being. On one hand, each of us has tendency to imitate others. On the other, we also tend to distinguish ourselves from others.

The collection deals with the question of how to create individuality in uniformity. Tracing the environment is similar to the subtraction technique in Photoshop, which leaves white-gray squares that symbolize an empty and transparent space. 

My collection incorporates motifs from well-known dress codes, symbols, and branding which have been partially removed and their identity is being tested.

The collection combines patterns and materials from tailoring, casual and sportswear that create new silhouettes. The collection uses digital and screen printings, hand-knitting and leather weaving.
