Eliana Freiman // What If?

My project, “WHAT IF…” addresses the biggest question of my life.  

I am a Vietnamese born Israeli woman and “What if…” has been in the back of my mind all my life.  What if I hadn’t been adopted?  What if I had stayed in Vietnam? What kind of childhood would I have had? What kind of life would I be leading?

Being an adoptee from Vietnam and growing up in Israel, while experiencing racism outside my home, have had a distinct influence on me.  

It is my life that has inspired me to design this collection.

The inspiration for the fabric design and garment patterns came from traditional Vietnamese clothes as well as from my Israeli childhood, participating in the Scouts and serving the Army. 

I learned about the traditional Vietnamese craft of weaving, which was foreign to me here even though I was born there. By using my own craft of knitting, I have made my own interpretation of the classic weaving of Vietnam.

Two worlds belong to me – the one I was born into and the one in which I grew up.  “WHAT IF…” combines both.
